Tobias,
a.k.a. Toby, Tobikins, Dogface, Teentee Man, Snow Bunny, or Dad,
is a wonderful addition to our family. We weren't really planning on
getting dog but we happened onto this litter of American Pitbull Terrier
puppies, and the runt was not in the best shape. We just felt that not
taking him home would be leaving him to a very uncertain life one of
which might involve dog fighting - yuck! These dogs get such a bad rap
in this country. At the turn of the last century American Pit-bull
Terriers were the most popular breed and in many homes. They are loyal,
attentive, very expressive, and best of all they are the biggest goofs!
Toby is no different.
He only weighed seven to eight pounds and was nearly three months old when he came to
live with us just after Thanksgiving. He is now he's four... months old and
weighs in at 18 pounds. We think he'll always be on the small side. He
knew how to sit, stay, go to the door, was barrier, crate and leashed
trained within three days! Now he can also shake, roll over, stand still
(to clean ears and trim nails), and is learning to return his toys to
his basket. He is true to his breed nature in that he adores people
especially children. We are not sure what his first few months were
like as he is terrified of other dogs particularly if they bark at him.
Toby goes to the pet stores weekly to socialize him and help him be a
more stable dog. He is really coming out of his shell and has actually
made a couple doggie friends in the neighborhood. We are so proud of him.
He really enjoys resting outside and is quite content to sit on the
patio chewing his beef bone or newest toy. He wears his sweater when
it's cool. When he's not sunbathing he is romping around the house with
our three children whom he adores. We even let him sleep right between us
with his head on the pillow. Since he is so small we tend to carry him
around - he is on the fast track to being totally spoiled.
He is mastering our stairs and starting to go to the park meeting new
people and pets - socializing any dog is a must but especially APBT's.
We want Teentee Man to be a well-rounded dog. Soon he'll begin small
agility obstacles in our back yard and I cannot wait to teach him some
fancy tricks. He is so smart it should be great fun for all of us!
Well I hope you have learned a little bit and won't be so quick to
misjudge the next APBT you see. It is irresponsible owners who should
be banned, not these beautiful dogs! I could go on and on about Toby and
this breed in general as I have extensively read about their history,
temperament, confirmation and know they aren't monsters - it's the
irresponsible owners who are the monsters.
A Word from Tobikins: Hey y'all - that's how we say it in Texas. I am
so happy my Mommy and Daddy, and brother and sisters found me. I was
the smallest and the other puppies chewed on my tail and wouldn't let me
eat very much. I eat the best stuff now, Nutro Puppy with a dose of
vitamin powder, and man, do I look good! Quite the handsome fellow
aren't I? My mommy gives the best kisses but she also keeps me in line
- she won't let me get away with nothin'! I have to sit politely while
she makes my breakfast and dinner. I guess it's okay because her and
Daddy really love me. They even gave me a great big pillow to play on -
it's so comfy. Well, I guess I better get going - I think I hear
Mommy's car pulling into the garage and she might have a new toy for
me! Happy days to everyone and please remember us American Pit-bull
Terriers are dogs too, and need lots of love.
P.S. the Snow Bunny nickname came to be as Toby hops around like a bunny
when he plays and is all white so it just fit him.
