Barrett, the Dog of the Day
Name: Barrett
Age: Eight and a half years old
Gender: Male Breed: Maltese
Home: Michigan, USA

This is Ellenwood's Little Bit of Class, otherwise known as "Barrett" or "Barrett Buster." Barrett came to us after having been rescued from a breeding facility and then placed in a home where he spent all day alone in a crate, while the owner worked. He lived in that home approximately two years, after which time the owner realized she had no time for him, and decided to look for a new home for him. A friend told me about him, I drove the two hours to pick him up, and was shocked by his condition when I arrived. He hid when I arrived, was scared and shaking when she found him and handed him to me. His whole body had scabs, and tear-stains on his fur from chewing on himself. I seriously wondered if I was making the right decision to take him, as he had never been around young kids and I had two at home, or other animals and we had several that he would have to get along with as well. But I couldn't leave him there, so I carried him, his one stuffed toy, and his crate to the car.

In just a short time, the change in him was amazing! His scabs healed, and his fur looks much better, as he rarely chews himself anymore. He has a wonderful temperament, a miracle given his past, I believe. He loves everyone, craves attention, and gets along with every one of our other pets, and pets anywhere we visit. For such a little guy, he has taken charge of the house and his housemate, our Bouvier Sporty! He is very playful (the toy he came with is the only one he will play with), but is also very content to be held and cuddled. When he's groomed, he's very pretty, but I really love to see him when he's just his natural, "scruffy" looking self - that's when his true personality shines through!! This is his well mannered, pretty "show" dog... and yet he's still the crazy little "maniac monster dog" that we love so much!!
