Dipstick, the Dog of the Day
Name: Dipstick
Age: One year old
Gender: Female Breed: Bernese Mountain Dog
Home: Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, USA

Hi - name is Dipstick. I am a Bernese Mountain Dog and I am a New Year's Eve puppy, born on December 31, 2005, and now I am a year old. They tell me they named me Dipstick because of the white tip on my tail, and they just happened to be painting when they first brought me home. Little do they know - we're all supposed to have white tips on our tails, but they're new at Bernese parenthood.

Here I am on my first day home in my new house in Bloomsburg, PA. Boy what an experience. From a place they call a pet store, into a thing that rolls and you can watch the world go by, to a store with enough food to feed a million litters, where they bought me a necklace and a bed and lots of toys, to a new house with this thing they call my big sister border collie named Poo-Chie, into a sink where they made me all bubbly, then whipped out this blowing machine thang which made me all fluffy. Well finally (as you can see) I had a chance to get comfortable and relax. The only question I have is "Is the one named Mama going to keep flashing like this all the time? I can't move without her running at me with that thing stuck to her face. I guess I'll just deal." I am, by the way, much bigger now.

Dipstick is Special because we just found out when she was six months old that she had bad hip dysplasia. We love her, and hopefully will have her taken care of in a few more months when she is completely developed. According to the Attorney General's office of PA - there is nothing I can do with the store or breeder because it wasn't detected by three months of age. And the vet says you can't be sure till 6 months anyway (lotta sense this makes to protect the public "puppy lemon law") - so I advise all pet lovers who get dogs that may be prone to dysplasia to pay for the x-rays immediately upon purchase. Cost is $150 - $200. It will cost us $3,000 for a complete hip replacement - but we're in for the long haul because she's worth it!!
