Our
dog is Bentley, he is a Harlequin Great Dane. Bentley weighs about
155 pounds and thinks he's a lap dog. He will just back up and sit on your
lap. He's very gentle and always dresses up for the kids at Halloween.
He will also open his own Christmas presents from Santa.
Bentley is very loving and affectionate. He loves to be in constant
touch with you. Just put your hand on him and he's happy for hours. He
leans on you too when you pet him. Bentley is a legend in our
neighborhood. If Bentley is outside in the yard all the kids all come
to pet and see Bentley. He is so gentle with the kids and dogs alike.
He loves to take rides in the truck. He'll have his big head hanging
out of the window in parking lots and people will just come up to him
and start petting him. Once someone left a picture of Bentley with his
head out of the truck on our windshield with a note saying he was
beautiful. He gets a lot of attention wherever we go.
Bentley is a big talker too! His face is easily read. You can tell
when he's happy or not. Most of the time he's just a happy go lucky
guy! He's very mellow and well mannered. We talk to him like a person
and he knows exactly what we're saying. People often say you must have
a big house, how much does he eat? We don't have a big house but our
yard is big for Bentley to run. In the house he lays around a lot in
his big bed. We feed him three cups twice a day of dry food. The other
comment we hear all the time is; Do you have a saddle for him? I wish
we had a dollar for every time we heard that one.
Besides Bentley's passion for taking rides, his other vice is rawhide
bones. We have a hall closet that we keep all of his treats in and
every night Bentley goes to the door and barks for a rawhide. Nothing
else will do, only a rawhide. I can really get him excited if I ask him
to speak. He'll tell you a whole story before he's quiet again.
Everyone who meets him can't help but love his gentle loving ways.
On a sad note, Bentley is our big, happy, beautiful boy but he's 8 1/2
years old which is getting very old for a Great Dane. In November he
was diagnosed with valvular heart disease. He's doing really well and
still plays and runs but he has to be on heart medicine for the rest of
his life. It brings tears to my eyes to think about life without him in
our home. My husband and I have no children so we call Bentley our son.
He's a part of our family and we love him dearly. We will treasure
every moment we have left with him. Another couple of years I hope!!!
