This
is Pilgrim, my four-year-old Flashy Red Brindle Boxer boy! (That's a
mouthful, I know!) The 'Flash' refers to the white on his face and neck
(as opposed to a 'Plain', which would only have white on the toes and
chest). The 'Red' refers to the tone of his brown color (other colors
include Fawn - a light brown and 'Reverse Brindle', meaning the base
color is Black and the stripes are Brown). The 'Brindle' refers to his
black tiger stripes. Often, you will see a Fawn without any stripes.
White or Check (refers to Fawn or Brindle patches) Boxers are born quite
often but until recently were culled at birth, being considered
unhealthy. Views on this, thankfully, have since been revised and people
now realise that they make wonderful pets, even if a few are deaf and
should never be bred. A common misconception is that White Boxers are
either 'rare' or 'albino'. While they can have some sensitivity to the
sun, the albino myth is exactly that - simply untrue!
Pilgrim is a ham, through and through. His nickname is in fact, Pig or
Piggy. This refers to his penchant for eating (like his mom and horsy
sister), his clowning around, his wonky camera antics and his fair size,
at 70 pounds. Unlike the textbook Boxer, Pilgrim loves the water and amuses
us by plunking his face in and blowing bubbles. He likes to come on
trail rides with me and my horse, Niki. And though I do not have any for
him to play with, Pilgrim loves kids. If there are any to be found,
they're usually hanging off all sides of him and he has the biggest
doggy grin imaginable on his face. He wishes the kitties would love him
as much as he does them, but has not been able to woo them, as of yet. I
am also considering getting him a fireplace for our cold winters...
he's just not that furry!
