This
is my dog Bernie, in one of his puppy pictures. We adopted him
when he was thirteen weeks old and now he's fifteen months old. He's gone from a
very cute puppy to a big handsome boy!! We think Bernie is a Greater
Swiss Mountain Dog mix. He looks just like a GSMD but isn't quite as
heavy - they generally are around 120 pounds and Bernie weighs in at 67
pounds now. He's just a tall skinny thing. Bernie's siblings were a
St. Bernard looking boy (who is now over 90 pounds), two Black Lab
looking boys, and two Rottie-look alike girls, so there's no telling
exactly what he is - other than a big softee. Bernie is a rescue dog
from an organization here in Tucson where my roommate and I work. I
first saw him when I went to pick her up one day. He was just sitting
there with his two brothers crawling all over him. I fell in love
instantly and adopted him the very next day.
Bernie very much likes to sit at the corner of our house outside where
he can survey "his yard" and "his street" and make sure everyone knows
he is there. He is very much the guardian of his pack. But, when he
gets to know people, the first thing he likes to do is put his paws on
their shoulders and get hugs and give kisses. Bernie loves to cuddle as
well. Bernie's favorite thing is playing ball - which he would do all
day if he could. He carries the balls around by the fuzz (so they look
like they are levitating just below his chin), throws them to himself,
and drops them inside things (bathtub, couch cushions, boxes, etc).
Bernie's other favorite thing is to take baths which always involve his
rubber duckie. When he's very dirty, he hops in the tub himself and
looks at me, then looks up to where I keep his duckie for bathtime. It's
very cute.
Six months ago we got Bernie a puppy (a Weimaraner named Olive). Bernie
picked Olive out of the litter. Olive is very feisty and Bernie lets
her get away with everything. She pounces on him, chews on his ears and
throat fur, rolls him over, steals his toys, and steals his bones - he's
a great big brother. When we first got Olive, Bernie refused to go on
walks anymore until Olive could come with him. They are inseparable.
I'm so glad I saw Bernie that day at the adoption center - he has really
been a wonderful addition to our household! His big sweet face, the
look he gives you when he wants a kiss, and his need for throat rubs
just brighten our days. He is living proof of the wonders of rescue dogs!!
