My
name is Nalladi (pronounced nah-LA-dee). When I was little, I was
living in a warm barn full of straw with fifteen brothers and sisters. My mom
was stressed out with that many puppies to feed and look after, so we
had to get ready for our new life away from the barn a little sooner
than most dogs.
When two boys and their mom came to see us in the barn, I fell in love the
moment I laid eyes on them. I had to hurry and race my brothers and
sisters so I could be first to meet them. The littlest boy hugged me and
hugged me and I licked him and squirmed with delight. He was eight, he
scooped me up, took me home, and we've been best friends ever since.
Well, my new family includes Rosie, a Springer Spaniel. She's 11 and
doesn't play rough Labrador games, so we lick each other's faces clean
every day, chase squirrels together, bounce frogs together, dig holes
together, share food together, and cuddle with our boy together at
night.
My new family had to teach me not to pull on my leash because I grew up
to be 100 pounds of solid Labrador very fast, and I became stronger than
my people. One day, and I tried not to, but I dragged my boy down the
block once on my leash. That's when I had to learn how to run carefully
along the bike with my boy instead, without wiping him out. I learned to
go into the store without eating the candy on the shelf, I learned how
to play games gentle too, I learned how to be careful with my tail in
the house so I don't knock everything over any more, and I learned how
sit still and watch out the window in the car too.
I like to meet new people. I try not to leave slobber on their pants,
but it seems like it happens all the time. I like to run and wrestle
with my cousin Bell, she is a two pound noisy spotted mini rat terrier,
and fast as a whip. She plays different dog games than other dogs
because she is so small and fast. She is really fun, but I can't catch
her as she is too fast between my feet!
And of course, my favorite of life's pleasures, I love to swim. I can't
seem to stay out of the water. Puddles, bath tubs, lakes, rivers,
swimming pools, duck ponds, bird baths, a bucket of water, rainy days
are the best for laying in the yard, anywhere there is water, I just
can't help myself. In the fall and spring, when the ice is covering the
lake, I like to break open a hole on the edges and go for a swim. I love
to swim!!!! And my favorite game I love the most... to play fetch with
my mom in the water. Oh that is heaven. I feel loved and very special.
