Elka Mae, the Dog of the Day
Name: Elka Mae
Age: Four years old
Gender: Female Breed: Beagle, Basset mix
Home: Clemson, South Carolina, USA

In this picture Elka Mae is on her way to the Clemson "First Friday Parade." She was adopted in Charlotte, NC in 2002 and then we moved to Clemson, SC for my job. She is special in so many ways, but I think the most important message to be taken from Elka is that pet adoption is the way to go!! Believe it or not, she enjoys tennis, long walks, and rainy days for lots and lots of relaxing! She's sweet, affectionate, and only gets mad when we won't let her share the pillows with us at bedtime.

Elka's full name is Elka Mae Hound Dog, as in the south, a good hound dog MUST have a middle name (but we call her Elka most of the time)! She is a very active pooch, in fact the only outdoor activity she doesn't enjoy is swimming, due to her short front legs and the weight of her body, she doesn't swim well (though she tries if there are ducks involved). She loves tennis for several reasons... she gets to be with her humans, she gets to run free within the confines of the fenced in area and she loves chasing and then running away with the batted balls. Elka also enjoys rides in the car, hiking and camping, time in the mountains and time at the beach. Her most favorite place to be petted is her chest, and if you don't believe it just put your hand anywhere near her, she'll take her paws and place your hand where she wants it.

I am sure that part of the reason Elka thinks she is human is mostly my fault. Because she was adopted I wanted to make her very sure that she was loved, loved, loved and wanted, wanted, wanted... thus spoiling her in every way. She sleeps with her humans in the bed, and only shows her grumpy side when it's time for us to move her to the foot of the bed; she also demands the front seat in the car. Elka doesn't think she's human, she knows she is... and it's hilarious. She feels very much a part of our pack, she knows she's where she belongs, and cold, damp dog shelters are just a faint memory for her!

She's very well behaved, and only barks when she thinks someone is at the door. She knows several tricks, she sits, shakes, know's "lay down," and roll over. Often she'll do them all in order when she knows she's getting a treat at the end; it's like a little routine. She also sits by the door when it's time to go out and know's how to "show me" if she wants a door opened by standing up and putting her front paws on the door knob.

During the day while we're at work, she lays on the bed and watches Animal Planet between naps. She's got it good, but we, as her humans, have it better... for Elka is simply and without a doubt, the best hound dog ever!
