Bruiser, the Dog of the Day
Name: Bruiser
Age: Five years old
Gender: Male Breed: Thai Ridgeback Dog
Home: Dry Ridge, Kentucky, USA

This is my dog, his whole name is Bellehound's Scrawny Tawny Lion "Bruiser," but we just call him Bruiser. Bruiser is very special to me, because he is my Service Dog. I rescued Bruiser from a kill shelter when he was just 3 1/2 months of age. He was due to be put to sleep due to over crowding. The shelter was completely unaware that Bruiser is a very rare breed of dog; there are less than 600 Thai Ridgebacks in the United States.

Bruiser has always been close to my heart, but when my health began to fail, I decided to train him to be my Service Animal. It's a job he takes very seriously. He goes just about everywhere with me. We are slowly teaching the public, through education, that not only the blind need service animals.

Bruiser saved me from a rattle snake bite in October 2004, by placing his body in front of mine, and pushing me out of the way just as the snake struck. Bruiser was not injured; he made sure to move me far enough away and also remain out of striking distance. He is clearly priceless.
