I
rescued Lightning when he was two years old. There was an ad in the
paper to get a free, AKC registered white shepherd. The breeder said he
was too small to breed (he was 85 pounds - perfectly big enough, but the
breeder was breeding oversized shepherds). If I had not taken him, the
breeder would take him away to pound. He was two years old and with any
big dogs, at two they are still like puppies. The first six months at our
home, Lightning "ate" the cushion from the riding lawn mower, ate
between the battery cables to my son's little battery operated jeep. He
also knocked the staples (for the staple gun) in the garage floor. To
this day, I don't know if he ate any. I got upset but I loved him, even
when he was a scamp.
He has always been a little skittish since he came to live with us,
almost like he had been abused. During the 4th of July, when the
fireworks would start, we would sit out with him or bring him in the
house. If we weren't home when it would storm, he would practically
break the kitchen door down trying to get in the house if he was outside.
Lightning has been my companion, my protector and a member of my family.
I got him after my divorce from first husband and I was a single mom
with two small children and Lightning made me feel safe. Now that he is
in his older years we let him in the house (he used to want to stay
outside most the time) Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall, whenever he
wants.
He has the best personality, he always has. He is not a licking type
dog, but if he lifts his paw to you, you are "cool". He is eleven years
old now. He has put up with a lot in the past two years, when we added to
our family three chihuahuas. He is great with them. He goes outside with
them and watches over them. He is a gentle fella but he is a great
watch dog. I wouldn't want to be the stranger who tried to come in my
or his backyard. I love Lightning so much. I know that he won't live
forever, but I will do anything to keep him happy and healthy until he
goes to the Rainbow Bridge. One thing for sure, the chihuahuas keep him young.
