What
is so special about Zeus? What can I say? He is smart and a
character, chock full of personality and enthusiasm - ready to go with
me at a moment's notice and always by my side. He is the best companion
ever!
He knows all the basic commands but nothing fancy. He goes out to get
the paper for me and makes sure I don't forget his cookie when he brings
it in. He also doesn't let me forget his after-dinner carrot. He is
very good about letting you know what he wants (he doesn't always get
it). He keeps me on my toes - it is a challenge every day to be "the
one in charge".
One of his favorite things to do is spend time on our property in the
desert where he can patrol the perimeter and let us know when company
arrives. He has learned to stay on the dirt roads/trails and to stop
and stand still and wait for me to deal with any cactus that he gets on
him (cholla - jumping cactus). He has learned not to chase the rabbits
and other wildlife. He spends his days on a porch swing up high enough
that he can survey the land and all that moves.
He can be pretty vocal - he talks about everything. Even the vet's
office knows when he is around. He lets his feelings be know clearly.
He is always excited to go there even though he spent a lot of time
there when he was younger. By the time he was one year old, we were
dealing with the effects of arthritis from hip displaysia. I never
thought he would get to this age and be doing as well as he is. Thanks
to some wonderful medications, he is fairly comfortable and enjoys his
long walks. San Diego is a great place to be outside and walking,
especially the leash-free area not too far from our home. It is large
and we can walk for miles every day enjoying nearly perfect weather and
other dogs and sometime horses. My hope is he will have many more
relatively pain free years as my companion and buddy - something I
wasn't sure I would have in the beginning.
