What
makes Dawson so special is that not only is he my companion in
life, he is my companion in service. Dawson is a medical assistance (or
service) dog. I suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury, and other multiple
injuries in an accident in 1998. Sometime later, I was diagnosed with
MS. My Dawson makes living independently possible. He is trained to
turn on/off lights, retrive dropped objects, open doors, unload the
dryer and pull the laundry basket to my folding station, and is an
emotional comfort when my brain gets overwhelmed. Dawson has changed my
life in countless ways... it is because of him that I'm able to take the
dis out of disabled!
While Dawson is a great asset to me, he is a wondeful asset to his
community as well. Dawson helps me run a nonprofit organization that I
founded in 1999 that educates the general public about the wonderful
benefits that service dogs provide for their partners with disabilities.
He demonstrates his amazing task repitoire to hundreds and is a great
ambassador for service dogs everywhere. Dawson takes time to meet and
greet his "fans", giving people and up close and personal glimpse into
the service dog world.
I think Dawson would be a great pet of the day! For more information
about this amazing dog's work, feel free to log onto our web site and
be sure to check out his own page.
