This
is Abby Rotten Dog. She came to us just two weeks after we had our
ten-year-old Australian Shepherd, Oscar, put to sleep. We weren't really
looking to get another dog so soon, but the vet's office called and said
that they had a puppy there that needed a home. One of the workers had
found her in the middle of the road, filthy, flea covered and full of
worms. We went to look at her, and it was love at first sight. We
jokingly said that we'd take her "for the weekend" to see if it would
work out, but everyone knew that Abby had found her forever home.
She earned the name Abby Rotten Dog when she was young. Although she
was (and still is) the sweetest dog, she certainly had her moments -
stealing socks, unrolling the toilet paper, eating tissue boxes, hanging
on to mom's pant legs for dear life. She has outgrown most of those
activities (except the socks & tissues), and has moved on to more
respectable pastimes like taking mom for long walks, playing endless
games of tennis ball with dad and catching her Frisbee.
This fall, we took her to Ocean City, Maryland, for her first real vacation.
She took to the beach and the water as if she had lived there her whole
life. We think she would have played tennis ball all day if we could
have handled it. As it was, we played and took lots of walks and had
one dog-tired pup when it was all said and done.
We look forward to many more happy years with our Abby girl. We may not
have been looking for her, but we are sure glad she found us.
