The
day we brought KC home from rescue, he
weighed 30 pounds. He's a healthy 50 pounds now and he's all muscle.
Our baby boy, KC, came to live with us the day after Christmas 2005. I
was looking for a dog, my husband was not. We have an eighteen-year old
diabetic cat and figured it was pretty risky to try bring another animal
home with the possibility that the cat would start spraying everywhere.
I kept looking on rescue sites anyway to try and find the right dog so
we could give one of the many homeless animals out there a good
home--that's when I came across KC and his story. My "first child"
before my daughter was born was a shepherd mix that lived to the age of
fifteen and KC looked so much like him I could not stop looking at that
website. KC had been seized from an abusive owner after a neighbor
called animal control to report a 'dead dog' in the yard next door.
Well, he was skin & bones, weighed only ten pounds (yes, that's what
I said, ten pounds) and was very close to death. The animal control
officer took him to the vet where they gave him fluids thinking that he
had very little chance to survive. Well, somehow he survived (God knew
we needed him) and after getting his weight up to 30 pounds, he was
ready for what the rescue sites like to call a 'heart home' of his
own.
Well, I drove my husband crazy and finally wore him down and we made the
six-hour round trip drive to adopt our very precious 'KC.' He is the
sweetest dog anyone could ever want. He is playful, not food aggressive
at all as you would think he would be after being intentionally starved,
and full of life despite his previous owner's neglect. After eight
months of having KC at home with us, we can't imagine life without him.
If you're thinking of getting a pet, please consider checking with
rescue groups. All these animals want is a home where they will be
loved and fed and wanted and there are so many homeless out there who
need you.
