Gopher, the Dog of the Day
Name: Gopher
Age: Two years old
Gender: Male Breed: Shih tzu, Silky terrier
Home: USA

As you can tell, Gopher just loves to smile for a picture! I oftentimes joke that he looks like the offspring of Benji and Fozzi the Bear. In actuality, Gopher is half shih tzu, half silky terrier. He is also 100% love, affection and energy!

Gopher came into my life around two years ago. I had never had a dog before, but after researching the different breeds, I decided a shih tzu would be the perfect match for me. One day, when I was walking out of Petsmart, I saw a very nice couple walking through the parking lot towards the store. Trotting along side of them on a leash was Gopher, then a little puppy. My first reaction was, "Doesn't he just have a happy spring in his step!". I approached the couple to say hello and inquire about the little guy. I explained I was considering a puppy/dog. The couple told me they knew of a number of shih tzu owners, so we exchanged numbers in the hopes of networking with the right person who would lead me to my first puppy.

Several days later, I played a very emotional message on my answering machine. It was Gopher's owner. She explained she had been battling an illness that prevented her from properly grooming/caring for Gopher, and she asked me if I would be interested in adopting him. After meeting with Gopher and his owners, I agreed to take the little guy home with me. It was the best decision I could have ever made!

Gopher (who incidentally is named after the gopher in the movie "Caddyshack" because of his resemblance to it as a puppy) has become my best friend. He came into my life around the time of my father's passing. Without him, I don't know how I would have made it through the loss. Gopher's former owner--who is now doing better medically--mentioned that it was "meant to be" that Gopher and I found one another. I couldn't agree more! I will forever be in awe and grateful to Gopher's first Mom and Dad who made such a difficult sacrifice in his best interest.

Gopher is now a happy, healthy two year-old. He has two feline siblings, one of which is his best friend. They play/wrestle constantly (the cat is bigger than he is!). My other cat hopes Gopher will someday implode, but Gopher still thinks he can win her over with his charm and effervescent personality. "Gophie" loves going "bye bye". His favorite destinations are Petsmart, Home Depot, the dog park, and the ice cream stand where he gets his own doggie sundaes! He spends time with Grandma when I am at work. He loves his "cookies", soft squeaky toys, his blankie, and cuddling. He has changed my life and touched everyone he has met!
