Here
is my pal Jake who is seven years old and I was initially told he was a
chow/shepherd. He is the cutest teddy bear I have ever seen and a
pleasure to have around. His only bad traits are he likes to wander
(if given the opportunity) and doesn't come every time I call him.
Sometimes he just lays there wagging his tail so how do I know he is
there?
Anyway, Jake should be in a movie, magazine or commercial he is so
adorable. Jake even saved our lives twice and is a fantastic watchdog. And
he is as sweet as can be around the house - even posing with his "bear
feet" for his silly person with the camera.
I just recently found out Jake is a Eurasian, a combination of a Chow
and a Wolf Spitz. It is a breed that was established in 1950 and recognized
in 1973 by the FCI. My friend and I were looking through her dog book
and saw a photo that I would have sworn was of my Jake. We rescued Jake
when he was a year old and he will be eight this June.
My husband and I are demolition contractors, and so Jake goes with us
all the time. Jake knows all the usual stuff like sit, stay, down,
shake a paw which he does then we say, "the other one". He also seems
to understand me when I ask him to move over (no hand movements are
required) and other such things. I don't believe that bit about animals
not understanding us!
Jake has his favorite "toys" which he plays with and sometimes takes one
to play with in the truck. He has had a teddy bear for about a year
that he personally picked out from over 100 stuffed animals. He loves
to toss it up in the air and "throw" it to us to give back to him.
Whenever I am out with Jake people stop me to tell me how cute, pretty,
great-looking etc that he is. Although Jake will be eight soon he acts
like a puppy and loves to chase other dogs, never aggressive more
passive and extremely playful. Jake loves to be chased and play
tug-of-war and have his ears rubbed. Because of his thick fur coat I
brush him every day sometimes for up to two hours. Jake is independent
but also very loving and wants to be near us all the time following us
around the house. If my husband or I are not together he searches for
the "other one".
Jake is a good watchdog and "guards" our driveway and our front door
barking to let us know someone is there. If someone comes to the door
or near us that he doesn't trust he will stand between them and us until
we give Jake a nod that everything is ok.
The "rescue": we were at our house in Vancouver, Washington and my
husband was very tired from a long week. The bedroom had baseboard
heaters and through tossing and turning one of the down pillows ended up
on the heater. Jake smelled the pillow and began jumping all over the
bed in a very different manner than he usually does to wake us up.
Within seconds of getting up and removing the pillows they burst into
flames. With the bed right next to the heater and the pillow in
flames, if Jake had not awakened us we could have all died. He seems
to definitely know the scent of a fire and finds us to let us know.
Another time, someone was trying to steal our truck at 4 am, Jake began
barking non stop until we woke up and stopped the thief.
I would highly recommend a Eurasian to anyone looking for a wonderful
companion!
