Benny, the Dog of the Day
Name: Benny
Age: Seven years old
Gender: Male Breed: West Highland White Terrier
Home: North Potomac, Maryland, USA

This is Benny, a West Highland White Terrier adopted by our family four years ago when our youngest daughter was 16. Benny was between two and three when we got him so he's between six and seven now. We drove to the Washington Animal Rescue League in Washington, DC to wander around and see who stole our heart, and to our shock there was a Westie ... a breed of dog I always admired. We put in our application and waited until we were approved, and of course the day they called us was a storm unlike any other, so we had to wait and pray that he'd still be there when we could make it into the city.

Since he arrived in our home he has forgotten that he was born a poor, white dog into a trailer park in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. He lived with a woman who rarely let him in at night, and some kind women in the area got her to turn him over, and at age three-ish he was driven up to WARL and the rest is history. He is the king of our house, and spends much of the day keeping guard against the squirrels, chipmunk, deer, fox, and any other invaders. At the Gaithersburg, Maryland dog park he doesn't socialize much, but is more likely to be found, what we call, securing the perimeter. We are kind of silly there, so we call him Benjamin Netanyahu, former prime minister of Israel, since he takes his guarding job quite seriously. Like most Westies he is unaware of his size, happy to be with his mom who he favors, and proud of the Westie shrine we've been building in our home in his honor. He has several beds and lots of toys, and hopefully has forgotten his long, cold, winter nights at the trailer park. Benny loves to chase the geese on his Saturday walks at the lake, go sledding (if it ever snows) with his dad, and bury his face in the snow. OOOOOOOOh we love him a lot!
