This
is Rocket, our rescue greyhound. Rocket is two and a half year old
male brindle greyhound and we have only had him with us for three months.
We rescued him through the Gold Coast adoption group at the South Lake
Feed store in Clermont, Florida. They told us that Rocket had only been
off of the track for ten days. He was quite shy when we met him, but has
blossomed into such a wonderful dog and loving companion. Typically a
racing greyhound will race for about five years, so we can only assume that
Rocket didn't live up to the trainer's expectations and was kicked to
the curb.
Every day with Rocket is something new and to watch his fascination
with all of his surroundings is quite entertaining and sometime really
silly! We have three other wonderful dogs and from the moment that Rocket
landed a paw on our property, they have all gotten along perfectly fine
which just reveals that he was meant to be with us. Since he is a young
greyhound, he still has a lot of puppy in him that was suppressed due to
his kennel/racing environment, so we know that he is just starting to
come out of his shell. He loves to play fetch with just about anything
we will throw and can turn 180 degrees midair while trying to get the
Frisbee from his black lab friend Cooper.
He quickly acquired a fondness for the swimming pool which we think is
pretty unusual. He loves to lay down on the large shelf area just
before the steps to cool off after a good run and we hope to teach him
how to really swim this summer. Greyhounds have very little, if any,
body fat so he sinks rather than floats. We have a life jacket just for
dogs which we will use to keep him safe while he learns to swim
properly. Rocket is a loving, affectionate and beautiful dog and we
look forward to sharing our lives with him.
