JayJay,
as you can see, is a bit of a "Looker." She came into our family
after the loss of the beautiful Kathy Ridgeback. A house yard is just
too lonely without a dog.
A cute face, a round belly, four little legs and two big ears, she was alway
trying to herd us by snapping at our ankles. She was always wanting to
walk, not be carried, when walking to the shops, even when the legs
could not keep up with the body. Attacking the lawn sprinkler to keep
cool during 40 degree celsius days was fun. Her step brother cat
Frankie, could not make up his mind what this creature was, although
over the years they became the best of mates.
Work has moved us all over Australia, first to Broome where JayJay was
lucky enough to grow up running and swimming and chasing balls,
frizbees, the surf and seagulls to her heart's content, and puzzling
over camels on Cable beach.
On our next move to central Queensland, she proved to be an great
companion, traveler and camper. From West Aussie, Northern Territory and
on through Queensland, then on to our move back to West Aussie, she has
never disgraced herself at camp sites or Motels, she has made so many
friends with just a smile from those beautiful brown eyes.
Not only is she pretty, but also clever. Knows all her toys by name, and
being a member of a family, means everybody has chores at the end of the
day. JayJay's chore is (or should be) to put all her toys into the toy
box, and sometimes that is a chore! A chore that she does love though,
is bringing her "dinner" bowl at meal time. Always wanting to do
something, like helping unload the shopping and pass things to put away
into cupboards, bringing soiled clothes to the laundry basket, but more
important than either food or chasing tennis balls is keeping that pesky
washing trolley under control, washing day is the most exciting day of
all!
What else makes her special? When you're feeling a tad down, a wet nose
or warm chin on your knee helps brighten the hour. Greeting Dad at the
door with "Kong" or "tennis" when he returns from work, carrying her red
"shopping" bag all the way to the shops and back and being "emergency
alarm clock" are also her specialties. Since brother cat Frankie passed
on, she has taken over the chore of "standby alarm clock." If the power
has failed or when the alarm clock has mistakenly not been set, somehow
she knows that Dad has to get up. Frankie took over from his lady cat
Tiger, now JayJay has saved Dad twice at 4:30am, and it is much less
frightening being woken by a warm "nudge-nudge" on the elbow.
And on days off, no alarm and we all sleep in. How do "dumb" animals
know that? JayJay is very special, as her Mom says, she is not just a
dog, she is a little girl that happens to have four legs.
