This
is my loving dog Griff. I was only three years old when my dad
brought him home for police work. My dad was a police K-9 officer and
worked with Griff. Griff was a normal loving dog at home but at work
knew what he had to do. During Griff's job he fought off many, many
criminals. Sometimes when my dad and older brother would goof off
Griff would come up and start barking at my brother because he thought
my dad was in danger. On days when Griff wasn't going to work or my
dad was going out for something Griff would sit at the door and wait
or him, and still does! Griff follows my dad around everywhere and
sleeps at the side of his bed (on the floor of course). Griff is a big
knucklehead too. If he wants you to pet him you'd better, or else
he'll start nudging your arm hard. A couple of times Griff has
knocked drinks out of peoples' hands wanting them to pet him.
When my dad was forced to retire after having a heart attack we
couldn't keep Griff. We either had to pay $10,000 or give him back. My
dad, knowing that Griff could never adapt to another handler, put an
ad in the newspaper to see if anyone could possibly help pay for
Griff, as we didn't have very much money left after all the medical
expenses. A nice lady called us one day saying that she was willing to
pay all the money! She said she was crying after reading Griff's story
in the newspaper. So we were able to keep him. He was finally ours to
keep.
Even though Griff is old, he still has is own ways. I find it hard to
take pictures of him since he always barks when the flash comes on. He
sleeps with me on the bed on the nights I stay with my dad, and
follows me around, knowing I will give him table scraps. Griff lives
with three other dogs too - another Dutch Shepherd, a Black Lab, and a
Silken Windhound (Borzoi, Whippet mix) and gets along great with them!
Griff is now an old cop. He lays on his couch all day, until feeding
time. We all know that Griff will always be in our heart, even when he
passes away.
