I
adopted Lucy from Min-Pin Rescue in April of 2006. I had just left a
full-time job to pursue a freelance career, so I decided that the time was
right to bring a dog into my life. I visited the local shelter to play
with a variety of dogs; at the time I favored Huskies and Labs and was
pretty sure I wanted a big dog. While at the shelter, I noticed a
miniature pinscher in a kennel. It had an "Adopted" sign on its window,
but I was struck by its energy, charm and cuteness. I went home and looked
up the Min Pin Rescue web site, and just one day earlier, a foster mother
had posted an entry on the site advertising a young female dog in need of
a home. Her full name is Lucy Jane.
When I got Lucy she was in rough shape. Her former owner had kept six dogs
in her household to breed for money, and Lucy was accidentally impregnated
well before her first birthday by a Blue Heeler. She had ten puppies, and
ironically, that large litter probably saved her life. My vet said if she
had only had two to three puppies, they would have grown larger in the
womb and she would have died during delivery. She had also never been
taken on a walk (she was almost two years old), and was mainly kept in her
kennel.
Today, Lucy is the most audacious, sassy, loud, feisty, loyal dog I
have ever known. She sleeps burrowed under our covers, stalks our cats
around the basement, begs for treats, goes bonkers when it's time for
walks, and does a full-body shake that is completely endearing. I had
wanted a dog for my whole life - 29 years - and I cannot describe the joy
Lucy has brought to me. In fact, I met her and my fiance just a few months
apart, and I often joke that I don't know which meeting was a more
monumental event. (Really, it's a joke.) She is a fixture in our family
now, and has taught me that small dogs don't have small personalities!
