About Us
Marley, the Dog of the Day
Name: Marley
Age: Seven years old
Gender: Female Breed: Chinook
Home: Atlanta, Georgia, USA

This is our first dog, um, excuse me... Princess, Marley. She is a Chinook which is a rare breed that can usually be found in northern climates pulling sleds. Marley is very grateful for having been rescued from that life of athleticism because she could not pull a sled if you paid her in a thousand pounds of bones! Well, maybe she would if you did that...

Anyway, she is our first fur child. We do not have human kids so she and her sister Emma, an Aussie mix, get all the attention in the house. Marley is truly a princess. People say she is beautiful and regal. I agree. She is an angel. I did not know I could love an animal as much as I love her. She is a true lover-dog. She will forfeit freedom outside to lay on her bed (she has three to choose from!) and just hang out with you inside. Although when the mood strikes she can be seen hunting the chipmunks that live in our back yard.

She is a "people dog" not a "dog dog". She loves to walk up to strangers and stare at them until they pet her. At the dog park she could care less about all the crazy running around. She finds a person with treats and becomes their best friend. She is so gentle which is a characteristic of the breed and one of the reasons we liked Chinooks. She doesn't know that people can be mean. She trusts everyone and often lets her rescue-dog sister know that people are okay after all.

Since Marley can't talk we have created a voice for her and a personality to fit it. Though she is quite composed in stature, she has a somewhat irreverent personality. She is a smart-aleck at heart, but plays up the gentle-spirit facade to manipulate people for food. She blames the 'street' dogs at her playschool for tainting her pristine view of the world! (I know, we have too much time on our hands right?) Actually, she does talk or "roo-roo" as we call it, another Chinook trait. We have a good howling session about once a week and she points her nose in the air and 'roo-roos' like a wolf. It's a guaranteed spirit lifter.

I am so grateful for Marley. Her enormous heart, thumping tail, big smile, unique 'helicopter' ears and horrible doggie breath are what keeps me going a lot of days. I could not love and enjoy her more. She is spoiled as she should be because she just gives and gives us her big heart everyday, all the time. I wish I could be as forgiving and open as she is, but when I can't I know that no matter what she is there waiting to lick me and nudge my hand for a head pat. I don't know what I will do when she goes to doggie heaven, but until then I am going to squeeze her tight and try to give her as much love as she has given me so far.
