Ruby,
who is a long haired, purebred Chihuahua and turned seven in December,
was adopted through rescue over four years ago in 2003. It has been a long
road for her to develop any kind of trust again, through no fault of her
own. In her first home she was abused by the male who insisted if she
was to be kept she would need to become a "camping" dog and learn to
swim. His idea of this would be to throw her in the lake and when she
sank he would finally go in after her and pull her out. One night he
left her out by the highway all night by herself and the next morning
the wife went back out and found her. (This was just some of her past
that we learned and we decided it was enough!) She was not allowed
inside of the house and at just four pounds it is a miracle she survived
at all. Finally when Ruby was 2 1/2, she was turned over to rescue by the
woman and she entered our lives.
It has taken over 3 1/2 years for Ruby to allow my husband to pick her up
but it was a huge step for her once she arrived at that point. She
still will snap out of fear, if someone else tries to pick her up but
she loves to be petted by them, enjoying both back and belly rubs. She
bonded to me right away and suffers separation anxiety if I am away for
even a short time. She hangs right with me.
Since she became part of our family we have since adopted three more
chis. Ruby had never been people or animal socialized so it has taken
some adjustments on her part but it has been very good for her to be
part of a "fur family" as well. She has had to learn how to "share" her
mom which still doesn't always make her happy. She is a "work in
progress" over this. She has even learned how to initiate play with
them which has been another big step for her. And because she has
worked so hard to overcome her past we would like to honor her.
