Allie, the Dog of the Day
Name: Allie
Age: Nine years old
Gender: Female Breed: Shetland Sheep Dog
Home: San Jose, California, USA

Allie is a sweet, and enduring Sheltie. She is quite friendly for a Sheltie. (They sometimes can be aloof to strangers.) She loves to chase squirrels, and geese. She is a true herder. She would never hurt them though. Allie is also part of "Pet Pals" assisted therapy. She works with children with special needs. They love to walk her, brush her at times... and always snuggle with her.

Allie is an affectionate girl, and she is quite friendly towards strangers. I can hardly take her any where without her getting lavished with pets and attention. She is quite the love. She is calm when I take her to places with me, like shopping in a Dog Friendly mall in Palo Alto, going to Carmel, CA, and even camping with me... tent and all.

Her Loves: She loves to snuggle with me on the floor and have me scratch her back and rub chest. She has her independent side when she is critter watching in the yard. (This is when she gets a bit noisy.) She once brought me a present (a live UN-harmed, baby possum). It was on the floor in my living room. She was so proud and could not understand why I was so horrified.

Her Games & More Loves: She likes play tug of war with her Frisbee of favorite stuffed bone. If you throw it she will bring it back, but she likes the tug of war best. Allie absolutely loves to go for a walk with me, and go for a ride in the car. Shelties are quite intelligent. If I mention to her treat, want to go for a walk or ride... she will hold me to it!

Her Tricks: Besides Allie's basic commands (sit, stay, down etc). I taught Allie to shake, and she does right paw, left paw on command. Tell her to speak she will bark on command, she also rolls over, and begs on command. I am recently training her to whisper. Which is sort of a lower grunt bark. (She is almost there with this.)

About "Pet Pals" pet assisted therapy program: I met up with a woman in a dog group I belong to, and she fell in love with Allie. She asked me if Allie and I would volunteer to Pet Pals a non-profit organization that she owns. This organization has facilities like hospitals, schools, brain injury and convalescent facilities etc. After qualifying her through a obedience and temperament test, she passed for whatever section I wanted to volunteer for.

What Allies does with PetPals: We currently work at a school with children with Cerebral Palsy and related special needs. We go to the school's special needs class together where she loose lease walks with the children, (With the walker or wheelchair too.) The children also like her to do her tricks for them. Play fetch with the ball. Sometimes they will just snuggle with her or want to brush her and give her water. etc.

Oh, she is my first dog to do the Pet-assisted therapy program with me.
