My
buddy Bandit will be twelve years old this year and we adopted him from
a rescue organization at the age of ten. Senior pugs aren't as quickly
adopted since most people want puppies, but I kept seeing his picture on
their website and finally couldn't resist anymore. There was just
something about that face, gray beard and all.
We had recently had to put my 11 year old pug Otisann to sleep and my
heart was still broken over her loss, so I wasn't quite sure how Bandit
would fit in but I wanted to give it a try and give him a loving home for
the last year or so of his life.
As it turned out, he quickly became a member of our family and is the
sweetest, funniest pet I've ever had the good fortune to share my home
with, and will probably outlive all of us. He's elderly but he gets
around like a much younger dog and can usually jump up on our bed from a
standing position just like a younger dog. Usually.
His teeth point in every direction due to a lack of good care when he was
young and there are a couple of them missing, so his smile is pretty
distinctive, to say the least.
He's completely deaf but very vocal when he wants you to help him onto the
bed when those jump attempts fail, or when he wants a bite of your food,
or when you come back inside after leaving him inside even for just a
minute by himself.
He'll quietly tolerate baths and nail clippings, but once it's over,
he'll plant himself in front of you and loudly let you know he didn't
think much of it at all. Then he'll jump up onto your lap, his favorite
spot, and leeeeeeean into you (his version of a hug, I think) but only
after he's given you a piece of his mind.
He likes everybody, including kids and other animals, he smiles a lot, and
spends his days sleeping at my feet, snorting and snoring, as I work on
the computer in my home office.
