Marco, the Dog of the Day
Name: Marco
Age: Four years old
Gender: Male Breed: Galgo Espanol (Spanish Greyhound)
Home: Calgary, Alberta, Canada

This is Marco. He is a Galgo Espagnol, which is a Spanish Greyhound. Marco was found in Southern Spain, near Utrera (Sevilla). He was rescued, and eventually brought to Holland by a Greyhound adoption group, Greyhounds Rescue NL. From there he travelled with my husband to us here in Calgary. He arrived in late November, so it was very cold for Marco, as you can tell from this picture!

Marco's life up to now is a sad one. He, and many other Galgos, are used for hunting in Spain. When they are no longer useful they are disposed of in various ways, from being hung from trees to die to being turned loose to fend for themselves. Marco was turned loose. He was then abused, hit, kicked and yelled at. Somehow he broke his hind leg. Luckily he was rescued before any of this abuse killed him, or before he starved to death. When he was rescued he was very thin. Six months after being rescued he still needs to put on about ten pounds.

At Marco's forever home here, he now lives happily with two other Greyhounds, Jamey and Tosca, a one-and-a-half year old. He also lives with an elderly Labrador and several cats. Marco is much loved, and we hope that he will learn to fully trust people again, after the rough start he has had in his life. The real Marco is already starting to show occasionally. He is a happy and playful four-year-old Galgo.
