We
got our dog Tjalfe when he was eight weeks old, and from the very start
we knew, that he was the most handsome and loving dog ever. Tjalfe has
got a perfect temperament - he's a calm good-natured giant, who gets on
with grown ups and children in a friendly way combined with a watchful
eye and alert ear. He's got a charm the know one can resist. He always
puts a smile on your face. He's is playful and very nice to other dogs,
his favorite thing is to sleep on the lap of us in the sofa. He doesn't
know how big he is (62 kilo).
Tjalfe is a Broholmer, which is an interesting Old Danish breed, which
dates back to the late 15th century. The daughter of King Frederik ll
(sister of King Christian lV) married the Scottish King James Vl in
1589. James gave some big English dogs as a present to the Danish court.
These dogs were mated with some local dogs - resulting in what we today
regard as the start of the Broholmer breed, The Old Danish Dog.
The Broholmer has been a favorite breed with the Royal Family. When
Countess Danner (wife of King Frederik Vll) moved to Jægerspris Castle
in 1854 she took an eager interest in the breed. The King and the
Countess each had a Broholmer. The King's Broholmer, of whatever gender,
was always named Tyrk and the Countess's was always Holger. One of the
dogs named Tyrk was stuffed after it died and is now kept in The
Zoological Museum in Copenhagen. In 1850 when the breed was almost
extinct, squire Niels Frederik Bernhard Sehested from Broholm Manor
in Funen became interested in breeding the dogs. Thus The Old Danish Dog
got the name Broholmerhunden, named after the place where Sehested led
pioneering work for 30 years with the breed.
Many people ask what kind of dog he is, and we think the history is
quite interesting. And all that history brought us Tjalfe, the best dog
ever!
