Mickey
is the love of our lives. He is a trickster, loves to mess with us,
and even though we made a lot dumb mistakes during his training, he still
has the sweetest disposition of any dog we've known. He often hosts other
dogs in our neighborhood when they wander from home and he will share his
water bowl and even his swimming pool on a hot day. His pup visitors have
included a huge Great Dane and a tiny Jack Russell who bossed him around
for a few hours. It's up to us to call the owners if the guests wear out
Mickey's welcome.
We got Mickey seven years ago from a Humane Society website. They told us
he was born in a litter of eight puppies to a Labrador mom and a visiting
boxer male. Mickey was a big puppy even though he and his litter mates
were nursed by their mom until they were almost three months. They
received no other food because the owner was a disabled Veteran who was in
the hospital when the puppies were born.
The first trick Mickey played on us was opening the front door while we
were gone, just days after we got him. We came home and he greeted us in
the yard. We asked each other: "Did you leave him out?" Shortly after, we
were in the living room and he just opened the door and went out. He loves
to play "Keep Away," especially when we are really upset about something
he has in his mouth, like one of my favorite shoes. His chewing years are
long over but the game remains.
As you can see from the picture, Mickey likes to tip over the recliner for
a comfy bed. We have no idea how he figured this out, and he does also
sleep in the recliner when it's upright. Sometimes he'll tip over both of
them, even though he can only use one at a time!
We love our big dog. He weighs about 85 pounds but he never gets fat
because we feed him good quality dog kibble and we take him for walks
every day. We're so glad we spotted him on the Human Society website! He's
our first cyber-pup.
