When
I first met Lola I knew three things for sure:
1. I did not want another dog, even though my sheltie had passed away a few
months earlier.
2. I did not want to adopt a puppy when there are so many older dogs who need
good homes.
3. When I was ready for another dog I would adopt another Dachshund, since I
had two of them already and I really love the breed.
Then one day my neighbor asked me if I could take care of one of her foster
dogs while she delivered another dog to it's new family in Tucson. She didn't
want to leave Lola in a crate for as long as she was going to be gone. Sure,
no problem. Problem...I took one look at her and I was a goner.
After a day with her I wanted to keep her but found out she was already spoken
for and was going to her new home the next day. I asked to be told if it
didn't go through, sure that I was seeing her for the last time. The new
family's other dog didn't like her and the next thing I knew I had another
dog. A five-month-old puppy. Not a Dachshund.
I think she's part English Pointer because of her markings, but I also think
she's part goat, because as a puppy she ate everything she could get in her
mouth. Rocks, paper money, rolls of stamps, socks, bras, plastic bags...she even
swallowed a latex glove whole (which came out whole the next day). She must
have a lead-lined stomach. All she eats now is actual food. She knows how to
open the cabinet doors so I have to keep a baby-proof lock on the cabinets
with the dog food so she doesn't feed herself.
She loves to swim in our pool and during her first summer here she was wet all
of the time. There was always a trail of water from the doggy door in the
bedroom to the family room on the other side of the house. But after the first
summer she started just going in the pool when someone else went in and dried
her off afterwards. It's much drier in out house now!
She loves her older brother, Regis, as you can see from the photo. She's not
too crazy about her older sister, Kelly, because Kelly thinks it's fun to
steal Lola's rawhide bones. But we're one big happy family most of the time.
Lola was given up by her first family because she was a puppy. In other words,
they left her alone all day while they were at work and were surprised when
they came home to a mess. She had a good life with foster families who loved
her and then allowed me to have her. I'd like to thank my neighbor, Tuula, for
bringing Lola (and Kelly) into my life, and thank all of the animal rescue
organizations for helping people like us adopt dogs like Lola, giving them
another chance at a good life with a forever family.
