Scout
came into our family around February 14th, 2008. She is an amazing,
sweet Black Labrador mix who just celebrated her fist birthday not too long
ago! She can play rough sometimes but, hey, she's still a puppy.
One snowy day in February around the 6th, my son, Jason said - and I think it
was a joke but - "Hey Ma, let's get a puppy today." I think I should add he
was 26 at the time. My two girls in the backseat - Nicole, 22, and Samantha, 13 -
went "Yay!! Puppy!" So what could I say to that. I told them they could check
out the local shelter and see if there were any female dogs that got along
with cats. My son, Jason, had just gotten out of his fifth open-heart surgery
and I had read that night that pets help people recover from certain traumatic
situations. How perfect!
The next morning, my son and two daughters set off for the local shelter. As
soon as they got there, all the shelter had was a five-year-old German Shepherd
mix - adorable but not a puppy or a girl. And I also think he was on hold! The
woman who ran the shelter told my children that another shelter had just
gotten a puppy. Before I knew it, we were in the car headed to another shelter
nearby. They brought us into this room where we were surrounded by cats. A
young woman opened the back door and a tiny black puppy (with enormous paws)
scampered into the room. "Inez" is what they called her. As soon as that
little puppy ran into the room, I looked over at my daughters. Their eyes were
sparkling as the puppy pounced all over their laps and licked their hands.
Even my husband, who refused to get a dog I might add, got down on the floor
and petted that adorable dog. The woman told us of how she got into their
shelter. Apparently, nearby, an old woman had died in her home before her dog
was able to give birth to the puppies. The dog died giving birth and the
daughters of the woman found a bunch of puppies and gave them to the shelter.
Inez (later renamed Scout) was the last to be adopted. We filled out the
papers for her and all we could do was wait.
Next thing we knew, we had a black lab pouncing around the house. She may be
a pain sometimes and nip at us when we come home, but as soon as you look into
her puppy dog eyes, you can't be mad anymore. She's rambunctious and full of
life and provides hours of enjoyment for the entire family. We have lost many
socks and slippers and maybe some shoes to this dog but the messes she
makes - and stuff we lose - is nothing compared to the joy she brings into our
lives. We look forward to many years with our precocious little scamp.
