Newman
is quite the a character! We found him at the Boulder County Humane
Society. We went looking for a specific (and smaller) type of dog. Then that
face came around the corner, after a walk with one of the humane society
angels. He was grinning and had all those lovely tufts of hair on his face.
He looked like a cross between an imp and an old man! How could we resist?
He found his forever home that day, and we found our best friend. As for
breed, maybe he's a wire-haired pointer and border collie mix? We'll never know.
What we didn't know about him, and I'm sure the reason he had been abandoned
was that he had a bad habit of running full force straight into people. And
he was big enough to knock a grown person down! I think as a small puppy, he
was encouraged to jump into people's arms. But then he grew and it wasn't so
cute anymore! We were able to train that behavior out of him fairly quickly,
and now he just loves to please his people. Nothing makes Newman happier
than waiting at the bottom of the stairs until we go up, then being "released"
to run up after us. He is happiest when he is making us happy, and that's a
great dog.
Newman is such a funny guy! He doesn't ever lie down without moaning and
groaning, as if he'd run 100 miles! He loves to "chase" a ball, but the
instant it stops, he walks away. So he's got 100% on herding instinct, 0% on
retrieving instinct. He loves people and likes to rub on anyone's legs, just
like a cat. He loves hiking and getting muddy with our other dog, Dalai! He
has beautiful brown eyes, with pink eyelids, which makes him look like a
person looking out of an incredible "muppet" mask. He likes to listen to
conversation and will perk up his ears and rotate his head to follow along. If
he wants attention, he "talks" in the greatest "wookie" voice! And, Newman
wins the prize for largest dog curling up into smallest bed!!
