I
begged my parents for a dog for at least a year. "Oh, no" they would say.
"We don't like dogs, they smell." I didn't give in. One day (on the 17th of
May, yes I remember the date), we visited the RSPCA, to hand in a volunteer
application for me. While we were there we looked at all the dogs, and there
was Piper. She was so happy to have someone go to her cage and say hello. We
asked if we could go inside and meet her. When we met her, she was jumping all
over us, tail wagging, with a squeaky beer can toy in her mouth. I hugged her,
and mum and dad looked at each other. "Jodie, do you really want this dog?"
they said.
Anyway, I did want that dog, and now I have her. Her name is Piper, and
according to the RSPCA she's a fifteen month old Weimaraner cross, and she was nine
months old when I got her. Boy, has she grown in more ways than one. You would
never guess she used to be a shelter dog, because she is just so happy. She
brings joy too my life. I spend all of my free time with her. Never has she
pulled a sad face, her eyes just sparkle with eagerness. Her hobbies include
long walks (and swims) on the beach, pulling on the leash, playing frisbee,
and sitting on the wheelie bin. Yes, that's right. I don't think she has an
'off' switch, but that's okay, because she gets heaps of physical stimulation
with frisbee. She also gets heaps of mental stimulation.
Piper knows lots of tricks. I'll list some for you: Sit, sit pretty, beg,
stand up, lie down, play dead, roll over, bow, shake, right spin, left spin,
up here, in here, she can identify the keys and the ball, stay, leave it, hold
a treat in her mouth then spit it out, weave between my legs, over the jump,
and more. Sometimes I sleep outside with her, on a mattress, and she curls up
next to me. She is so comforting. She is an amazing dog, and I can't remember
life without this little bundle of joy.
