Kelly
is an angel with four feet and fur. She came into our lives to help
heal our hearts after our first Dachshund, Scooter, died after a very
short battle with an aggressive cancer. She died three weeks before
Christmas in 2003; that was not a happy holiday that year. The day after
Christmas I decided I had to get another Dachshund to fill the hole in my
heart and contacted a friend who works with an animal rescue group. I told
her if she didn't find me a rescue dog I would have to buy a puppy. That
got her moving quickly, as I knew it would, and within a week she found an
eight-year-old female that was being given up because she was aggressive
towards the family's new human child. Scooter had been an extremely
aggressive dog too (she loved us but no one else could get near her) so I
knew how to handle this kind of behavior.
Kelly was brought to us on New Year's Eve; she was shy and nervous but
friendly towards us and our other dogs, not aggressive at all. She had a
huge rash on her chest (our vet thinks she was allergic to her nylon
collar) and her ears were terribly infected... no wonder she didn't want
a toddler touching her. We also found out after a year or so that she had
a herniated disc in her upper back. That explained why she didn't like to
be picked up or touched on one side, and why she always had a funny hitch
in her gait. The surgeon who repaired her back said some of the mass had
been there so long it had hardened and couldn't be completely removed.
They were able to remove enough of it so that she is no longer in pain,
never aggressive (my grand niece calls her "the sweet one"... my other
two dogs aren't nearly as nice as Kelly) and I can tell she understands
that we helped her and she's grateful. We're so glad to have her as part
of our family. And I'm guessing she's pretty happy with her life here too!
