On
March the 1st, 2008, my mom, dad and I went out to start looking for a
dress for my upcoming formal dance. At the end of the day, we decided
that, since our golden retriever Kokomo had passed on two weeks earlier
after a stroke, we wanted to see some happy, healthy dogs. We went to a
local grooming/boarding place that sold puppies to look at the different
breeds. My brother was out of town, and we hadn't been planning on getting
another baby for a couple of years. While we were looking around, we saw
this adorable brown chi nearly bounding out of the display he was in, and
decided to play with him. Once we'd sat down, and the little boy had run
around for an hour yanking around a toy horse that was larger than him, he
quieted down, and started wanting to be held more, and loved.
After two hours of sitting in the pen and playing with him, my parents
left to go discuss what to do. Mom and I were in love, and I knew dad
really liked him, too. Finally, my dad walked over to the counter to fill
out the paperwork, and my mom walked back over to me with this big smile
and tears in her eyes. Chee was like a combination of animals we'd lost
over 2008. Pixel, our eighteen-year-old cat, had been not that much bigger
than him, and he had the personality of Kokomo.
My brother, when he first got home, hated Chee. But that puppy has done so
much for my mom and I since we got him, that we're so glad he's ours. Less
than two weeks after we got Chee, I was hospitalized for a week. My entire
Spring Break was spent there, on IV narcotic meds, and no one knowing what
was wrong. One day, though, because I was the only one in the ward, the
nurse let my dad sneak Chee into the room to see me. The kisses I got that
day made me far better than anyone could imagine, even though I still was
in pain.
When they sent me home, I was unable to do much of anything. I would stay
on the sofa pretty much all day, with Chee in my arms. Even when I knew
he'd rather be playing with his toy cheeseburger or rope bone, he stayed
with me. He slept curled up against me many nights, when he was supposed
to be in his "bed" for crate training. I found out not that long after
that, that I'd have to go to another hospital for three weeks, and I'd
have to leave my puppy. When I got back, the first thing I did was get
into the house, and hug my baby-cakes. He always made me feel better, and
still does so. I'm glad he's going to be here for me as I go into high
school, because I don't know what I would do without him. He's the most
amazing animal I've ever met.
