This
wild looking creature is my plush coat Japanese Akita, Takeshi cha'Diche.
Her registered name is actually Fuwafuwa Mitsubachi which means 'fluffy
honeybee'. She is from a litter of nine puppies born in southern California and
at the tender age of nine weeks was loaded onto a plane and sent to her new home
with me in Nova Scotia. Upon arrival, she was a bit of a zombie - it was a lot
of miles and a lot of hours for a baby; but by the next day she was alert and
lively and it was like nothing out of the ordinary had happened to her.
She has turned into a truly interesting companion, and she makes me laugh at
least once every single day. This picture of her was taken when she was about
eleven weeks old and looking every inch the stuffed toy. cha'Diche has developed a
special bond with my other female dog Muesli in that she is the constantly
annoying pesky little sister. My eldest dog
Kioko,
is not interested in participating in their rough and tumble wrestling
matches and just looks on like a dignified older brother. In typical akita
style, cha'Diche is suspicious of strangers, but is an affectionate, playful
dog to the people she knows and trusts. Her unique look and amusing
personality make her a perfect candidate to have her moment in the spot light.
cha'Diche gets her name from the Klingon for a warrior's "second," but I
thought it was a perfect name for such a noble, loyal breed. She will be two
years old on August 10th.
My dear cha'Diche is my 'hyena' - that is her most commonly used nickname
actually. She is much cuter than a hyena, but it seems to suit her. Plus, I
seem to have gone with the wild dog theme for my other two as well. Kioko
looks like a very large fox, and Muesli looks like a wolf. This is one of the
most recent photos I have of her. We went on a backpacking camping trip in the
middle of June, and since the three dogs had considerable gear that I didn't
think I should have to carry, they had to do their share. cha'Diche did get
the better deal - she carried the pack out so it was less two days worth of
dog food. She didn't seem to mind being a pack horse at all.
She does have one cool trick. She knows how to pray - she'll put her front
paws up on a chair and bow her head between her paws. Not sure what she is
praying for, but it looks pretty cute. She is also a force to be reckoned with
when she has a tug toy. She drops it on command though; in my house, the dogs
don't win the prize, they just have the joy of the game.
