Fire
was bred to race, but never did! He was the smallest of the litter,
and was never quite quick enough to make the grade as a racer. So, whilst
his brothers and sisters were all racing (and winning plenty too) - Fire
was always left behind at the kennels on race nights. Last year, the
racing kennel owners reluctantly put Fire up for re-homing (they had grown
fond of this funny young dog with bundles of character), and we spotted
him via the Retired Greyhound Trust advertisement.
We have had Fire as a pet since May 2008. He has changed the lives of my
wife and I, and our fourteen-year-old daughter, Micah. Fire doesn't much
care for being 'home alone'. As soon as one or other of the family starts
to prepare to leave the house, Fire is up and about... hovering in the
hallway, and nudging us with his nose. He just loves going for a ride in
the car, but a run across the fields is his best pastime! Despite not
making the grade as a racer - Fire can run like the wind!
Fire is the most lovable pet. He will stand motionless for an hour whilst
he has his ears massaged - except that it makes him fall asleep sometimes!
He is very protective of his new family. When my daughter and I play-fight
- Fire stands and barks at us until we stop. He hates the peace of his
'pack' being disturbed.
Fire's goal in life is to receive as much TLC, hugs and cuddles as
possible. We are helping him toward his goal as often as we can!
