Sparkey
was everyone's friend. He loved to play ball. He broke his knee
when he was two, playing with a basketball. He was very energetic and
active. The only time he would stay still was if I hugged him with both
arms. The old adage about a big thing coming in small package never fit
anyone better than Sparkey. He had more heart than any dog I have ever
had. (And I have had many!) He was my son's constant companion, and even
slept with him. But he saved his best for me. He loved to play fight with
me and made vicious sounds when we did it. He was a talker, too. He would
make you understand his needs with his wide vocabulary.
He once was attacked by a large animal and somehow escaped. The puncture
wounds on both sides of his chest showed how serious the attack was. He
recovered without any residual apparent fear of chasing whatever he
desired. One day we stopped at a park with a muddy creek. Some ducks were
swimming in the creek. Sparkey took a running leap after the ducks. When
he popped up, the surprised look on his face indicated he did not know
they were in water. The muddy water must have appeared solid to him.
He lost one eye to a fungus infection at eight years of age. Even that
didn't slow him down. Then, the week of Jan 11, 2009 Sparkey began having
grand mal seizures. He survived until I could return home on my birthday
Jan 13, 2009 and died in my arms that night. My son is sure he was just
waiting for me to return home. He went peacefully in my arms after
suffering seven seizures within ten hours. I stayed up with him all night
and held him after each seizure. The vet could find nothing wrong, but I
suspect some type of brain problem related to the missing eye. All who
knew him sorely miss him.
