We
rescued Molly last year from North Carolina, where she had a pretty
rough puppyhood. She was acquired as part of a car deal, and was crated
with another puppy for long periods of time, on a deck of a porch. Being
a Border Collie with no outlet, she developed a fixation on reflections
and shadows. After that, they were left loose to run the streets, and
within a short time, the children of a neighborhood took her in and fed
her. Due to that, she developed a deep trust and comfort around
children. Having three children myself, and having recently lost our
previous Border Collie to lymphoma, my wife and I were moved my Molly's
plight. After making contact and arrangements, Ms. Molly, the southern
belle, was living the life in new england. She quickly bonded with the
kids and has an acre of her own territory to run. Most photos of the
kids include her, and she is quite tolerant of our cats as well.
Molly just loves everybody - any visitors that we have must be greeted
by Molly first. She loves to be petted and will just fall into anybody
who will give her a good rubdown. When I lie down on the floor to watch
TV, she is right there, plopping down right snug to me with her head
tucked under my arm. You can't sit next to her without her putting her
paw on you or getting a big kiss. In short she is a big Lover.:) She
also has a fierce side that's very protective of my three kids, aged
three, five and seven. She does not herd them, but just loves to be
within their company. When we first got her, she would stand and wait
for shadows of birds to fly by to chase. Now, we give her ample play
time, with soccer, tennis ball, and our long daily walks. She
loves the kids and acts the same way to them as she does to me.
She is very dog friendly, and I never leash her (except when necessary)
but she will snap in warning if other dogs get too close to my kids. She
keeps a nice barrier around us when we walk.
She loves car rides, and has to ride along every time I drop them off,
and pick them up from school. She loves the water, and especially our
new water slide wading pool on a hot summer day. She has a funny thing
she does, when I only give her dry food. She will splash her drinking
water, with her muzzle, into the dry food. We only realized what she was
doing when my wife and I heard a strange noise while we were watching tv
one night. After muting the tv, we went into the kitchen and saw her -
what a riot, I guess she was trying to tell us something. She is very
submissive also and whenever she meets a more dominant dog, even an old
little poodle one time, she will go down and submiss by showing her
belly, it was a cute sight!
