Our
daughter brought Ringo home from our local shelter with the promise that
she would do everything to take care of him. Our daughter has grown and moved
away for college and career and now Ringo is our dog, beloved companion, and
quite literally my lifesaver. Three years ago I contracted a severe infection
in my leg. While I was home recovering Ringo would not leave my side. After a
couple of months I had fully recovered and one afternoon Ringo came to my
side, sniffed my leg and started to whine and make the distinctive Basenji
yodel. My husband convinced me to go back to the doctor where it was
discovered that the infection had returned and was deep in a bone with no
symptoms. To this day, at least once a day Ringo sniffs my leg on his "daily
rounds" to make sure I am okay.
Ringo is half Whippet, so when he is not on "medical watch duty" he loves to
run at the dog park and sniff everything. Every smell tells a story to Ringo.
When Ringo came to us he had one small light brown spot on his back. Every
year since, just before his February birthday, another spot emerges in his
white coat! He has seven spots now and we just noticed that number 8 is starting
to show. It is a very convenient way to remember his age.
Ringo is a devoted family member who loves as greatly as he is loved.
