This
is my dog Salem! Salem is very special because she loves everyone and
everything! She loves our three cats, and greets everyone at the door with a
wagging tail and a big kiss!
Our pup Salem is one year old now, and her persona is "text book" of a typical
Siberian Husky.
The Magician
Salem has shown us time and time again the "Houdini" in her. Since she was a
pup she has magically appeared outside her crates numerous times, and squeezed
through or jumped fences, and almost dug herself out of a closed door room. We
quickly realized our little baby has anxiety about being constrained and left
alone. We have her enrolled in a doggie daycare minimum three times a week,
and she couldn't be a better dog! I still believe she has some "Houdini" in
her, but we haven't seen her tricks in a long time!
The Athlete
Salem has been a wonderful dog with making playful games for herself to play.
From tossing her bone around and playing catch with herself she is sure
entertainment! She loves going for long hikes in the summer, and in the winter
she pulls like we are a sled if on a leash. Doggie daycare during the daytime
releases a lot of energy playing rambunctiously with her doggie friends. There
is always a nap time together during the day, when they are all pooped out.
The Dietician
Some would think Salem is a picky eater, but most huskies, including Salem,
just live on minimal amount of food. We try and feed her on a schedule, but
unless it is something lavishly delicious (like steak) if she doesn't feel
hungry, she won't eat. Sometimes she doesn't eat for days at a time! While I
am on the subject of what Siberians like to eat, let's dispel the myth that
Siberian Huskies will never be able to live with a cat. Although they have a
very high prey drive, many Siberian Huskies have accepted cats as part of
their family, as Salem has done ours. Keep in mind that although the Siberian
Husky has a very strong prey drive, they also have a pack mentality. Some
huskies like Salem will accept cats as part of their pack. Salem enjoys
following the kitties around, and keeping them out of trouble. Many days you
can find them laying together chilling out on the couch or in the hallway.
The Wanderer
Salem takes any chance off a leash to wander. She loves the independence, but
as soon as her nose hits the ground she is off on a trail of scent with no
looking back!
The Gardener
DIG! DIG! DIG! Salem loves to landscape our yard, any chance she can get! We
always keep a towel ready by the door and often cringe at the sight of
rainbecause when there is rain, there is mud. And where there is mud, there
is Salem standing in the middle. Although this is an image that can make us
laugh and sometimes cry. ;)
The Socialite
Salem loves all other dogs, and loves to be around people. We learnt early on
that she doesn't like to be by herself for long periods of time. In this case
she either starts to howl, planning her escape route, or even chewing our door
handle at the front door. The best thing for her is to keep her entertained,
and if no one is around she loves her Kong filled with table scraps or peanut
butter! Although, Salem loves to spend time outside in the back yard by
herself, either sleeping in her lawn chair, or just people watching and taking
in the fresh air!
The Guardian
Salem is an extremely sociable pup, which makes her useless as a watch dog. In
fact, if a burglar broke into our home, Salem would likely show him where the
money is and then invite him to play. She might do harm in kissing the burglar
to death, but that can take some time. ;)
This is our pup, and we love her to pieces! She is well trained from puppy
school, and couldn't be a better best friend!
