Bella
is special because she is one of five adopted rescue pets in our home.
She is a 65 pound face-licking friendly loving pet. We nicknamed her "Giant
Beagle" because of the unusual DNA testing results which match her appearance
so well. PetSmart DNA testing says she is a Beagle, Great Dane mix.
She is the sister of three cats (one Maine Coon mix and two siamese) and of
Blue (a six-year-old black Lab/Husky/Pit mix with bright blue eyes.
Bella came to us from an animal shelter where we volunteered. She became the
playmate of her new big brother Blue, and three family cats. And play they do
indeed. She taught Blue to dig and they dig as many holes as possible. They
chase tennis balls and chase our cats and squirrels whenever the opportunity
arises. Bella is a big tease and likes to outrace her big brother to tennis
balls we toss. If she gets them first, she parades around him in circles or
drops the ball in front of him and holds it down with her foot and dares him
to take it away. If he gets it, she tries to snatch it out of his mouth. She
also likes to taunt him by hogging bones, and as a result, Bella and Blue pass
bones between them. She is definitely the alpha in spite of weighing fifteen
pounds less than her brother.
Speaking of hogging, Bella's unusual mix of beagle and great dane (and a trace
of dachshund and cocker the testing said), has endowed her with head the size
of a beagle, and a 65-pound body with a long tongue. Because of this, she
snorts just like a pig. She likes to climb up on any sitting human family
member and try to affectionately lick us to death in the face. That beagle
nose is also ultra-sensitive to the presence of any food well before it is in
sight, but she is well trained and both she and her brother will sit side by
side waiting for the command to gobble up their treats. Bella is very
active, and greets anyone who comes near with a not only a wagging tail, but
wags her entire rear end to the point we often call her wiggles. She loves to
take long rides in the car to the Atlantic shore where she chases waves and
barks at the ocean water. We were initially surprised at the genetic test
results for her ancestry because it was an unusual mix, but her appearance
fits with the results. At the end of the day when all the balls are chased
and bones are chewed, Bella and her brother are often found curled up on the
couch together sound asleep.
