Denny
is a registered Pet Therapy Dog. We visit the Veteran's
Administration nursing home together here in Gainesville, Florida. When
Denny was just a puppy, I had my eyes on him then, thinking that his
personality was exactly what was needed for Pet Therapy work. He is slow
moving when needed, will not lick - as this alone can cause damage to
aging skin, does not "shake" with his paw (a dog's nails are unforgiving)
and he is friendly, but gentle.
Obedience classes, temperament testing, letters of recommendation - all of
this was needed to become a Therapy Dog, and he had no problems at all
with any of them.
Now we visit the soldiers, and we listen to stories. Denny moves up close
so that his long fur can be caressed, the tactile sensations racing up the
arm of the soldiers as the petting continues. And as the man smiles, we
know he's forgotten his pain for a moment. This is the reason for us being
there, my Denny gives love and comfort to all he encounters.
