Piper
has been my friend for fourteen years. We adopted him when he was
Five months old from the Orange County Humane Society, and he is a
wonderful family member. We are unsure of his mix, but we know he is part
Bernese Mountain Dog. Piper is very smart, he knows over 40 tricks and
commands including "spin", "shake", "hide" and "cross shake". Cross shake
is when he crosses his paws and shakes my hands. When he hides he goes to
a pile of toys and sits in them, and he blends right in! When I give him a
treat he does a little dance, I'm not sure why but it's really cute. He
loves homemade treats like Peanut Butter biscuits and regular dog cookies
with occasional dog-friendly icing and coconut sprinkles. He's going a
little deaf now, being Fourteen years old but he is still healthy and
playful--a puppy at heart.
When Piper sits on the sofa he sometimes covers his eyes with a
paw--another trick I taught him. But he falls asleep with his paws
sticking out, which I find adorable! He wakes me up in the morning by
jumping up on my bed and licking my face, not the most pleasant way to
wake up, but I love seeing him in the mornings. He likes to go for walks
along the beaches and sniff pretty much every tree and palm tree in sight.
Before we adopted him, he had an injured left front paw that the Humane
Society was working on helping him with. Now and then it comes back, but
only for a few minutes and no where near as bad . He has his own beach
towel, so when we take him to the beach he likes to sit in the sun on his
towel and watch people or sunbathe. Or he swims with some dog friends and
plays with his Tennis Ball, his favorite toy since we brought him home. He
also loves the shady palm tree in our backyard and relaxes under it when
he's outside. He also jumps in the hammock and falls asleep in it.
I love Piper, and he is the best dog I could have ever asked for.
