Chestnut
came to us from a breeder when she was a few months old. Right away,
it was clear that she was a bundle of energy. On her first day, she was
already exploring around, trying to chew everything in sight, and even trying
to be the boss of our older dogs! When we brought her out into the garden,
she immediately began sniffing and probing everywhere; it's probably due to
her nature as a hound/hunting dog.
Chestnut's hunter lineage has led her to discover quite a
few unusual, and often gross things hidden in the backyard. She's found old
bones, old toys, insects, etc... Sometimes, she even pries through the
garbage!! Also, she has a habit of burying toys that we give her. Now that
she'd older though, she is starting to lose her interest in doggy toys, but
otherwise she still acts like an overgrown puppy. Chestnut's hunter instincts
got her into trouble once. A twig got stuck in her throat, and we had to rush
her to the vet. They managed to retrieve it successfully, and afterwards she
(and we!) were very tired, but relieved.
Another time, to my greatest horror, Chestnut chewed up the
modem wires!! I was so upset, especially as I was just going to use the net
to make a phone call. I was really angry with her, and disciplined her by not
spending as much time with her as I usually do... oh, but fortunately, she
did not get electrocuted. Still, that was a very bad thing to do! Naughty
girl!
Despite Chestnut's aggressive and domineering nature, she
is very sweet and loyal. When I returned from a long period away, she
excitedly ran to greet me, jumping all over me and greeting me with doggy
kisses. No matter how long I am away, she would always be faithfully waiting
for my return. My mother told me that during my absence, Chestnut would stand
by the door, waiting for me to come and play with her.
Chestnut is also useful in killing household pests. She's
managed to get rid of cockroaches, mice/rats... One time, she was trying to
get into one of the storage rooms, and I was getting annoyed because she was
making such a fuss, whimpering, barking, and pawing. For some reason, I
finally decided to give in. It's a good thing I did because as it turned out,
there was a big black wild rat inside, which she immediately killed! Good for
her!
Indeed, Chestnut is one of the best pets I could ever ask
for. She livens up my days with her lively (albeit often feisty ha ha)
spirit. She's my baby. Everyone should have a Chestnut in their life.
