Meet
Skye, my four-year-old Border Collie. We brought Skye home when she
was nine weeks old. Our family friend's Border Collie, Lola had puppies
and Skye was our choice out of the other Four beautiful puppies, her
litter mates. When she was a puppy, before we brought her home we were
living in Springfield, Massachusetts. I would visit the puppies every day,
take them down to the park and get special one-on-one time with Skye. I
even got to babysit Skye for a day, and have her sleep over for a night
when she was Seven weeks old. Then the day came to bring her home and it
was surely one of the best days of my life. She is just perfect! We named
her Skye because Border Collies are of Scottish heritage, and our family
is. She is named after the Isle of Skye in Scotland. We also thought the
name was beautiful!
Skye learned her training very quickly as a young puppy, going from the
basic "Sit' and "Shake" to harder, special tricks like "Dance". She
learned lots more than that, and Dance would be one of her favorites. She
jumps up, twirls and barks in a little happy melody. I'm not sure how I
got her to do it, but it sure is cute! She's really smart, I even taught
her how to Skateboard (sadly I can't get a photo of it). She puts her paws
on and pushes off with one of them, and smiles while doing it! She learned
that when she was almost a year old, and everyone in Springfield that saw
her thought it was adorable!
Just after she turned one, we moved from Springfield to where we live now,
Virginia Beach, the beautiful coastal city. Skye loves it here, and
whenever she has the chance to swim she will. Since we've been here for
about Three years, we have also been entering her in Agility competitions
and lessons. She's amazing at jumping hurdles, weaving and doing
everything a Border Collie can do! She's placed First two times, Second 1
time, Third two times and Fourth Once in all of her small agility
competitions. I'm very proud of her! She's also amazing at fetching, I can
throw a ball off of the balcony and she can catch it from below, she can
also run great distances to catch a flying Frisbee.
Aside from all the training and such, she loves to kick back and have her
lazy days and fun. On warm days, she loves when we take her down to the
coast for a nice swim. Her favorite thing for the water would be her Water
Kong Wubba, she fetches it many times with no problem at all. She likes
taking her daily walks along the Boardwalk, the view in fantastic and she
loves meeting tons of new people and dogs. When we're ever "lucky" enough
to get snow in Virginia Beach, which is very not common she loves playing
in the rare weather, digging and tunneling through the snow. Last January
of 2010 we ended up getting snowfall, and she was going crazy with
happiness! Her best friend is Sierra, a Tri-Colored Australian Shepherd.
They play together whenever they can.
Skye also loves travelling with us, and we have been to a few places. In
February, 2011 she came with us to Australia, to see the beautiful Gold
Coast. In 2010 she came along to Florida with us to enjoy the sunshine,
not in Hurricane season of course! She has also been to British Columbia,
Canada with us in 2009. Besides travelling, she loves coming to events
with me. In October she will be coming to the Neptune Fest with us. We're
going to see the Virginia Beach Animal Care &
Adoption Center display out on the Boardwalk, going to meet some dogs and
possibly look into adopting a friend for Skye if she would like that!
Skye is my best friend, forever and always!
