Annika
is our third Border Collie. I chose her name because it means "very
beautiful". She is quite a clown, and is the most mischievous of the
Border Collies we have owned. She loves to shake paws, do high-five,
sit-up, roll over, play dead, and walk on her hind feet. We have finally
gotten her to "wait" when we open the door so she no longer dashes out.
Her hobbies are chewing the caps off of soda bottles, chasing flashlight
beams, playing dodge ball, soccer, digging the water out of her pool,
running around a track she made herself on our property, and most recently
doing agility. She is beginning to excel in it and certainly keeps my
husband on his toes.
When Annika was four months old she broke her toe while playing ball with
our other Border Collie Katie. When she was a little older we had to take
her to the vet at Easter time because she jumped up on the dinner table,
chewed open many plastic eggs we had prepared for an Easter egg hunt, and
ate a lot of chocolate candy. Fortunately she was fine. Then when she was
9 months old she jumped up on the bathroom sink, chewed up our tooth
brushes, ate a full bowl of dry cat food, shredded the box of Kleenex,
turned the water on in the sink, and ran down the hallway into the garage
where she ate a small jar of Vaseline and about 20 thyroid pills. She
spent the night at the vet where they emptied her stomach and observed her
for any problems. She came home the next day ready to get into more
mischief. We now keep all medications in closed drawers.
At bed time, when Annika wants to go out, she will jump at the side of the
bed to get your attention. If we don't respond she will jump onto the bed,
hand you her paw and lick your face. She has even grabbed the covers and
pulled them down to the foot of the bed to get my attention.
Annika is a challenge all the time but we wouldn't have it any other way.
She keeps every day full of excitement and fun.
