Jax
is a Chipin (a recognized hybrid, Chihuahua Miniature Pinscher cross),
and he's almost four months old. We have been enjoying Jax's antics and
company for nearly two months. As I am a farm girl and have never had a
indoor dog (much less one this small!) this whole process has been a
massive learning curve for me.
Jax is particularly fond of me, and if placed on my boyfriend's lap will
whine until I take him back. He loves his kennel and takes all toys,
treats, and stolen objects in there. His favorite things are his KONG
Tugger Knots toy, a braided bully stick, baby carrots, and any socks or
underwear he can steal from the floor. He is very eager to please and
usually obeys with minor corrections. At this point, he listens well and
understands "come", "sit", "Kennel", "no", "leave it", "wait", and is
showing an understanding of basic manners such as waiting for the ok
before following people into rooms, through doors, down the stairs, and
out of his kennel or carrier as well as waiting for the ok to take toys
and treats from human hands. Jax and I are still working on heeling on a
leash. Jax is well crate-trained due to his severe separation anxiety. He
is also very well pee-pad trained, and it will take some more time before
he isn't so distracted by the smell of grass that he forgets to do his
business outside.
One of Jax's biggest "treats" is to be allowed to snuggle in bed with me.
He was allowed to sleep in bed with his first family, and so immediately
upon being placed on the bed he will burrow his way under the blankets to
the foot of the bed and curl up to sleep. If he is still wide awake and
playful he will bounce around under the blankets and race in and out of
the little tunnels he makes.
Despite the overall cost of owning a dog and the stress of training a
puppy, I am so grateful that we have Jax in our lives. He brings so much
surprise and love :) I am also grateful to all the research I did based on
the information available on Cesar Milan's website as well as
dogbreedinfo.com to ensure that my tiny puppy does not grow into an
aggressive toy-sized dog with Small Dog Syndrome.
Jax and I have great fun together. He brings me his bone or treats to hold
so he can chew them better while I do my homework, he brings me his toys
to hold so he can play with them better while I watch a movie, and then
when he's all played out he will crawl on my lap to sleep. I bathe him
with baby shampoo, so nothing is better than snuggling with a sleeping
puppy that smells like clean baby skin. Jax dutifully growls and barks at
anybody that walks close to our front door (even the mail lady!) and even
loud noises in the house. And, of course, he explores the house with his
mouth and tongue, so garbage and possessions constantly need rescuing. I
definitely could not imagine life without this little bundle of boundless energy!
