Viola
van der Waterkant arrived by plane with her own
German passport. I fell in love the next day. From the moment she arrived, I
knew I would spend the next 15 years being trained to live with royalty by
the smart, savvy, too-sweet little girlie-dog. I fondly call her "Fe Fe
Viola" at play, because she prances and dances into the hearts of family and
strangers alike.
Her personality is outgoing and determined. Loud noises
don't phase her calm curious composure. I rarely hear a bark and have never
heard a growl - even when playing tug-of-war. But she does talk! There are
moans and whines signifying each of her desired goals - requesting food or
play or more attention. She tilts her head to understand each word and runs
eagerly to comply with the meaning. Mention a ball and five wet balls appear
magically in your lap. She catches each in mid-air leaps.
At the lake with her "cousin" Raleigh, she saves us by
pulling our rafts to shore & out of danger. Without flinching, she supervises
July fireworks. She patrols her forest yard against the predator squirrels
and at night she demands a feast for her labor. Before bed, Viola puts her
feet in the air for a belly-rub and goes into a Zen-state for her nightly grooming.
Why love Viola? Just peer into her sweet little face and
you immediately know you must be special to be able to live in her world.
