Flicka
is an abuse survivor, a beautiful faithful rescue boy. I rescued
Flicka from a dark stinking bug infested hellhole. I had recently married
a lovely American gent and came to live in the U.S. I had had the best
girl in all the world in the UK, my Cleo. She was a black German Shepherd.
She had died eighteen months before I emigrated. Once I was here I was desperate
for a dog and only lasted being here two months before I found Flicka! He
was around sixteen weeks old when he came into my life. He started out as
"Flicker" as his life was flickering when I first met him, he was in a
kill shelter that was so awful it was scary. He had just twelve hours left
before he was due to be killed, and was just a terrified sixteen week-ish old
pup. I misspelled his name twice the next day as Flicka ... and it stuck!
Flicka is very protective of me. He takes a while to get used to new
people, but once he does he loves them dearly. He takes to women better
than men. We are working on his problems with people. He is such a loving
soul with his "family." He loves to play in the water and introduced his
"little brother" Lucas to the lake! He really loves his Quacky Duck toy
you see in one picture - it is one of only two toys he has not destroyed over the years!
March 1st is the day I gave him as his birthday. We will never know
exactly when he was born, but maybe a new day that we chose when he came
home and our love will help make up for whatever they did to him the first
sixteen weeks of his life. We worked so hard to bury the last of the past,
those issues that still haunted him. We have done well, but as always are work in progress!
We had a great celebration for his third Birthday. He was not supposed to
see that day, he was a throwaway abused pup, hours from death. He has
grown into a wonderful dog. He still has one or two problems, but let's
face it, who or what doesn't? His loyalty is unquestionable and his love
is unconditional ... and so is mine for him. Flicka is my velcro boy! He
stood beside the hole in my heart that was left when Cleo died and he
quietly built a bridge over it to my soul. When he curls up beside me at
day's end and lets out that long contented sigh, simply know it is the
greatest gift he could ever give me.
On March 10, 2010, Flicka gained his CGC (Canine Good Citizenship
certificate). I was so proud of him. It was a roller coaster those first four
years, and that night was more than I could dreamed of. We got a point to
work from ... and as I have always known, never give up and never drop the leash.
I love you Flicka. Despite all your problems, you achieved your CGC. I
cried that night, so so proud of you. We are still work in progress, but
you have done so much! Then, you and Lucas looked after me and never left
my side after the surgery I had. Between you, you checked on me and simply
laid close to keep me safe. Every night when we go to bed you curl up
tight beside me and I lay my hand on you and simply know you are my Heartshine.
Beautiful Boy ... we finally got you a safe, fenced place last June to
walk and sniff and just simply lay in the shade and "be!" Your own two
acres, your own retreat. You finally felt at ease enough to even initiate
play with Lucas, which was grand to see. We've come a long way in six years
sweet boy. You have made such big strides! You still look to me to be safe
and secure and that's okay, I will love and keep you always, as you rescued me.
Love from Mum, Dad and Lucas
