This
is Natasha, our Russian princess. We think her Husky lineage gives her
the blue eye and the Queensland part gives her the wide-set ears. She loves
to backpack and go adventuring. She adopted us after we hiked by her house a
couple of times last winter. Her first family couldn't keep up with her and
she already had a bad reputation at the pound. Her last bailout was $250 so
her owners had fitted her with a big shock collar but even that wouldn't
stop her from running off!
We must be doing something different, though, because she has never even
tried to run off since she came to live at our house. She did circle our
yard just outside the brush line for the first week but other Husky owners
have told us that's standard behavior. We kept her in sight and talked to
her, told her we would walk her every day. Luckily, we passed her test so
now she stays put because she wants to be with us. She even lets us brush
her teeth although she thinks it's pretty weird! Also, we have enough
squirrels to keep her busy in the yard. They are smarter than she is and
stay high in the oak trees, barking at her as she waits below, sometimes for
hours. She took to the backpacking saddlebags like she was born to wear them
and she has made many trips into the Sierras carrying her own special
freeze-dried food. The first time we crossed a creek, she stood on the side
and yelped and whined but when we came back to the same spot later in the
day, she waded in and swam it like a pro. Same with sleeping in a tent: at
first she tried to walk through the mesh but once she got the picture, she
curled up and slept through the night, quiet as a mouse. We love our
adventure dog! We feel honored that she chose us.
